What is neuroscience, and why is it a critical ingredient for learning?

Brain research is the missing piece in many educational institutions. For example, in the classroom, is your child taught how their brain forms memories, learns new information, develops triggers/associations? Often, the answer is no. The reason for this is that teachers do not have training in neuroscience and cognition. Teacher training programs rarely delve into the brain’s intricacies.

At Teseo Academy, our team is educated first and foremost around the methods by which students learn. We use neuroscience to design lessons and customized programs that amplify our students’ ability to remember information and form novel connections. Our Academy believes that education should be rooted in the workings of the brain.

With her university degree in neuroscience and collection of research experience surrounding the brain, our founder combines the world of brain science with education. The result is a hybrid model for education that centres on how the brain works. It is our neuroscientific background that allows us to push your child to their highest potential. We patiently and diligently alter our instruction, exercises, quizzes, and homework to reflect individualized learning goals.

What is the academic, cognitive assessment that you use? How does regular testing help my child?

Many current studies state that gaps in problem-solving, communication skills, and fine motor development can worsen unless the right interventions are adopted. At Teseo Academy, we identify these gaps using cognitive assessments and student observations. From there, we design and implement customized programs to help us improve areas of weakness and amplify areas of strength. Regular testing gives us the data we need to create the optimal learning plan for your child. Click here to learn more about our cognitive assessments.

What is brain training, and how do we use it?

Think of brain training as physiotherapy for your mind. It consists of targeted brain exercises administered to strengthen a specific learning capability, like long-term memory retention. We integrate personalized brain training into our Math, Science, and English classes. For example, in our math classes, students improve their processing speed while learning mathematical content by analyzing various graphs at sequentially increased rates. This exercise develops math skill fluency while improving processing speed – the perfect duo! What are the results of this brain training? Where do we begin? Our students learn faster and better across all subjects. Suddenly, they’re understanding complex concepts and solving problems with confidence. Learning becomes fluid and fun.

Why are live classes 1.5-hours in length? I’m not sure my child can sit still for that long.

Our nervous systems function in 90-minute biological cycles. These are referred to as Ultradium Cycles and are associated with high-frequency brain activity. Our 90-minute classes feature two short cognitive breaks to reset the mind and increase focus. This structure allows us to capitalize on how attention works. Although live classes are 1.5 hours in length, one-on-one sessions are altered in duration to suit each student’s needs.

My child already has so much homework. Why are they assigned daily online flashcards?

We design our flashcards using the Leitner System framework of spaced repetition. This technique is an effective methodology to encourage lasting memory formation for foundational knowledge that we need to make inherent for our students (i.e., multiplication tables, BEDMAS, chemical formulae, physics variables, sentence structure, etc.). The flashcards are colourful, engaging, quick (5-10 minutes), and accessible on any device with an internet connection. Students love the flashcards and find them fun! Plus, they lock in and solidify the information your child is learning, making it concrete in their minds.

What is the ‘lab-in-a-box’ program?

In our Junior Scientists Program, we create fully customized boxes or ‘labs-in-a-box’ (delivered right to your door) that contain tangible items, puzzles, and experiment materials. Students learn how to use these materials to perform exciting experiments and collect observations during our live classes. We give them a taste of what it’s like to be a scientist!

How will my child’s understanding of concepts be assessed?

In our live classes, we administer weekly quizzes which feature questions related to lesson content. Each of the examinations is cumulative, meaning they contain questions presented from the first to last class. Regular testing is essential for memory retention, and it is a great way to take inventory of student knowledge and customize our teaching approach.

Do you teach the Canadian Curriculum?

Yes, every class and program we create aligns with the Canadian Academic Curriculum from grade 3 to grade 12. As Ontario Certified Teachers, we know which foundational skills are necessary for each grade level. This knowledge makes us highly skilled at identifying our students’ skill deficits and then filling them appropriately.

What is problem-based learning (PBL), and how do you use it?

PBL is the meat and potatoes of our program, where the magic happens. During our problem-based learning lessons, we help students explore a complex cross-curricular question where the goal is to view a real-life situation from multiple perspectives. These problems allow students to apply the foundational knowledge they gain in our daily flashcards to the real world. As we explore together, we develop creativity, international-mindedness, and resourcefulness. By making complex connections, students form novel neural circuits and increase their problem-solving skills.

How can I track my child’s progress, grades, and homework in your programs?

After each live class, we send out a summary email with concepts covered, relevant resources, and homework assignments. Based on your child’s submissions, assessment results, and class participation, we provide you with monthly progress reports – like report cards – so that you know what your child’s levels of comprehension are. We also provide you with detailed information about cognitive assessment results.

We create a personalized profile for each of our students for one-on-one sessions, including lesson breakdowns, session screenshots, helpful resources, and assessment results.

How are payments for classes and one-on-one sessions handled?

For all our programs, you will receive your invoices through a program called Square. We will send invoice information weekly. You will then submit payment through our online portal or via etransfer. When scheduling sessions in our interactive calendar or buying courses on our Thinkific page, clients must send payment to access any services.
